I'm LeeAnn Perritt. Next year, I will be attending the University of Massachusetts and majoring in Economics and History. After attending the Virginia Governor's School for Agriculture in 2017, I fell in love with the Agricultural industry and all that it has to offer. While in attendance I became very interested in the growing hunger crisis that faces our world today. My thesis combines both my love for economics and my passion for agriculture.
Abstract
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are a 20th century development aimed at helping farmers grow the highest yields of crops without loss of revenue. GMO crops have scientifically altered genes which have been modified to have specific traits that benefit farmers and meet consumer desires. Further, growing GM crops is environmentally safer than growing traditional crops and provides a safe food source that is visually and nutritionally appealing to consumers.Because GMOs are controversial to much of the public, it is important to educate and discuss the future of GMOs and how they can aid in fighting the growing hunger crisis that faces our world.
